Dope Waves, Dope Waves

If you are a big fan of early 2000’s hip hop, you definitely have to listen to Roxbury, MA native, Brezze’s LP, Dope Waves. The seven song LP combines elements of east coast hip hop mixed with contemporary beats. Dope Waves features narration from the audiobook, Cocaine + Surfing: A Sordid History of Surfing's Greatest Love Affair written by Chas Smith, editor of Surfing Magazine. Brezze’s delivery is intentional. The juxtaposition of the narration with the lyrics emphasizes the perspective of both players in the dope game.

Brezze pays homage to New York rappers G-Unit and Cam’ron of Dipset on his tracks, “Coppin Them Thangs” and “Hustle or Not.” The samples used in his verses take you to a place of nostalgia and familiarity. It’s can be risky for a new artist to use samples in their songs, but Brezze added his own sound to make it unique and curated. The LP demonstrates a high level of rap that requires a strategic mind. Brezze gives us everything we need in a hip hop album: storytelling, wordplay and consistent flow.

Dope Waves showcases Brezze’s talent with using metaphors to enhance the sound of his lyrics. “Coke plays/dope waves/I’m here to flood the town,” Brezze raps on his first track, “Lines.”  His lyrics hold weight; they have a presence. In “Married to the Game,” the Boston rapper says “Married to the game/my scale became my best man.” Brezze speaks on the grind of being a hustler and the commitment and dedication that comes with it.

Brezze is definitely a name to know and to be talked about. His lyrical dexterity and vivid imagery makes you hang on every word. The classic hip hop instrumentals are met with hard verses that are reminiscent of Harlem rapper, Dave East mixed with the Nas. Breeze showed up and showed out on this project; proving that he isn’t one to be overlooked. Show some love and check out Dope Waves on all streaming platforms
